An Arlington police officer shot and killed a man late Thursday night while responding to a call about a suicidal man, the department said on Friday morning.
Officers were dispatched to a home on West Lovers Lane near Jones Drive at about 10:45 p.m. The person who called 911 reported that the man had access to knives.
Police said the 911 caller met the officers at the front door and led them to a room the man was in. The officers could hear yelling, and learned that a family member was also in the room. As one officer entered the room to get the other person out, the man became upset and pulled out a large knife, police said.
“The officer gave the man multiple verbal commands to drop the knife, but he did not comply. The man then moved towards the officer, still holding the knife,” police said in a statement. The officer then fired multiple shots at the man.
He was taken to a hospital where he later died. Police said the man was 56 years old, but have not yet released his identity.
Arlington PD said it has launched criminal and administrative investigations, which is standard policy when an officer uses deadly force.
