    DULUTH — With sunshine and temperatures in the 60s and 70s, hundreds enjoyed an edible and educational afternoon outdoors at the Lake Superior Harvest Festival at Bayfront Festival Park in Duluth.

    The free, family-oriented event went from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. while celebrating its 32nd anniversary. This year’s event featured a large farmers market, live music, food trucks, expanded Energy Fair experience, vendors, exhibitors, educational demonstrations and more. The festival also strives to be a zero-waste event.

    Among the vendors were

    Cohasset-based I Am Acres,

    owned by Jim and Vickie Azure. Their produce selection included peppers such as jalapenos and Carolina reapers.

    “If I don’t sell them all, I’ll make bear spray out of them,” said Jim Azure while smiling.

    Another kind of pepper was on site too, but this one was of the four-legged variety as Pepper the poodle and her human Richard Pierce,

    of Tamarack Hill Farm

    in Embarrass, made the nearly 90-minute trip to Duluth, strolling along to assist guests and also sit at booths. Potatoes are their specialty.

    “We farm all organic potatoes, three or four varieties,” said Pierce. “We hand-plant them and hand-remove the bugs and hand-dig them. We also raise a small flock of sheep, about 24.”

    Organized by

    the Lake Superior Sustainable Farming Association,

    the Harvest Festival showcases local agricultural production across northeastern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin to promote sustainable food systems. Additionally, attendees had a chance to check out another festival with the nearby Gourd Days along Waterfront Plaza.
