GRAND FORKS, N.D. (Valley News Live) – The North Dakota Department of Health and Human Services is investigating potential cases of food poisoning at the University of North Dakota.
A statement from the University reads: UND is aware of reports of illness potentially associated with Wilkerson Dining Facility from Aug. 22-24. The University is working closely with the North Dakota Department of Health and Human Services as it investigates. The health and safety of our campus community remain our top priority, and we will provide updates as appropriate. As of mid-day, Thursday, Sept. 3, UND is not aware of any specific findings from the Health Department that link any of the reported Aug. 22-24 illnesses directly to the Wilkerson Complex.
Cases of illness were reportedly traced to Wilkerson Dining Center located at 3450 University Avenue in Grand Forks. The facility is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and accepts both credit/debit card and the university’s meal plan.
The North Dakota Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) tells us they are aware of and currently investigating reports of illness that may be associated with eating at a UND Dining Hall. An investigation is ongoing to identify the scope of the reported gastrointestinal illnesses and identify potential causes. According to Michelle Delthoff, Director, Infectious Diseases & Epidemiology, HHS is collaborating with Grand Forks Public Health Department and UND Student Health Services on the investigation.
North Dakota Health & Human Services records show violations were found at all 3 most recent inspections of Wilkerson Dining Center.
At the most recent inspection on 07/01/2026, one violation was found. The inspector comments states: Reach-in cooler in allergy food prep area holding meat-based products above 41 degrees. Items in waffle area, such as waffle batter and whipped cream, were held above 41 degrees.
Violations related to food temperature were also found in the previous two violations. On 4/8/2026, observation comments state refrigerator with allergens holding PHF/TCS such as beef and chicken above 41 degrees. On 12/8/2025, an inspector noted meatballs were not hot held at 135 or higher at time of inspection.
